Where would you suggest buying ham for the ham sandwich? Chris is not a ham eater so I never buy it. Also, could I substitute a different protein?
A different protein would make the sandwich something other than a Croque Monsieur, but it might still be a delightful sandwich. The salt in the ham compliments the gruyere cheese and béchamel sauce well, so if you use a different protein, I’d use something similarly salty. Whether ham or something else, any local butcher should be able to set you up with a few slices of a quality meat for just a few dollars. Enjoy!
I am on my way to Paris for the onion soup, Grandpa
